EMILY REO
Brooklyn, NY
https://emilyreo.bandcamp.com/
Emily Reo has been recording and touring independently for over a decade. Starting with 2009’s Minha Gatinha, a self-released collection of home-recorded droning noise-pop, she’s continuously released a slow drip of pop experiments via artist-operated imprints. Her second full-length, 2013’s critically acclaimed Olive Juice, was a progression towards bright, kaleidoscopic synthesizer layers and loops, with prismacolor melodies upon melodies; her songs depicting the beauty of nature through vocoder processing. Over the past few years, Reo’s live shows have notably evolved from solo sets where she would play electronics alongside soft visual collages, to explosive three-piece endeavors full of expressive drumming and keytar soloing—a shift that speaks to the evolution of the project since Olive Juice. With each new body of work, Reo has increasingly pulled back the haze, sharpening her pop vision; "Only You Can See It" is her most fully-realized collection to date, with her most intricate lyricism and dynamic songwriting. Reo’s background as a visual artist continues to play out over her sprawling pop songs: her ear for negative space, for shading and saturating, for shifting between the bright and the subdued.

AND THE KIDS

Since their earliest days as a band, And The Kids have embodied the wayward freedom that inspired their name. “When Rebecca and I were teenagers we just lived on the streets and played music, and people in town would always call us kids—not as in children, but as in punks,” says Mohan. On their third full-length When This Life Is Over, the Northampton, Massachusetts-based four-piece embrace that untamable spirit more fully than ever before, dreaming up their most sublimely defiant album yet.

BAT HOUSE

"[Bat House] is an album of luscious excess: dazzling angular hooks, wildly inventive instrumental interludes and punchy stop/start rhythms... Bat House’s approach to music, their liberal use of the musical toolbox, gives this album an element of suspense and surprise.."

BUKE AND GASE
https://bukeandgase.bandcamp.com
Arone Dyer and Aron Sanchez improvise, organize, mix, master, release and perform genuine, contradictory, rhythmically dense, thoughtfully lyricized and melodically-driven sonic landscapes. Always accounting for self-sufficiency they aim to perform each sound live, utilizing all available limbs to manipulate their sonic space. They filter and tweak the self designed instruments referred to in their nom de plume through multiple effects concurrently while triggering home-crafted rhythms in time, therefore, the duo is often seated during their shows, and the flurry of action onstage has led many an observer to question who plays what and how in the deceivingly wide aural experience. The girl sings her heart out; medics will siren their arrival shortly after the final note to replace her throbbing meat-ball with scotch tape and pliers.

KID CONGO AND THE PINK MONKEY BIRDS
http://kidcongopowers.blogspot.com/
From the early '80s onward, guitarist Kid Congo Powers (born Brian Tristan) was a distinctive presence at the nexus where roots music meets punk. Powers had memorable tenures with the Gun Club (which he co-founded with Jeffrey Lee Pierce), the Cramps, and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. However, while he was the instrumental half of the Congo Norvell duo in the '90s, Powers didn't consider stepping out as a frontman until 2005. That year, Powers released two solo albums, Philosophy and Underwear and Solo Cholo. As Powers began refining his skills as a songwriter and vocalist, he ramped up his recording and touring schedule, and formed a band to accompany him on his projects. Fusing primitive, swampy rock & roll, garage rock, and fractured blues with East L.A. Chicano rock and a dash of punk and psychedelia, Powers dubbed his new band the Pink Monkey Birds.

LOI LOI
https://loiloi.bandcamp.com
Loi Loi is an electronic synth-pop duo of Kristie (vocals, keyboards, synthesizers), Ron (trumpet, flugelhorn, synthesizer)... and, on more than 5 occasions, Maryjo (bass; of Color Palette)!
Loi Loi started four years ago in China, where Kristie was living and working at the time. Since her time as a Peace Corps volunteer in China, Kristie had always dreamed about becoming a Mandarin pop singer; this turned out to be an easy goal to achieve while she was stationed in Guangzhou, China. She also successfully composed original lyrics in Mandarin, pairing pop compositions with occasional radical experimental sounds vis-à-vis vis her microkorg. Loi Loi continued to develop in Spain, where Kristie tried her hand mixing original Spanish lyrics with an eclectic background of rock and roll, R&B, electronic, and soul influences. The band went fully electronic when Kristie acquired a Korg Electribe drum synthesizer. Today, Loi Loi embraces a somewhat economical setup but maximizes on a suite of atmospheric effects, original samples, and a multi-tiered song structure.

“Loi Loi is a great example of progressive, experimental music that represents D.C.’s tradition of pushing forward.” -DC Music Download

¨The Washington D.C. group highlights the universal power of women through sounds & visuals that elevate femme empowerment against all aspects of adversity.¨ - Impose Magazine

LIGHT BEAMS
http://lightbeams.bandcamp.com/

Light Beams began in 2015 when longtime Dischord artist Justin Moyer (El Guapo, Supersystem, Edie Sedgwick, Puff Pieces) -- influenced by 80s-era freestyle music and Sheila E. -- started playing sampler and timbales with Sam Lavine, the longtime drummer of D.C. hip-hop mainstays the Cornel West Theory. With the addition of bassist Arthur Noll, formerly of Kid Congo Powers and Alarms & Controls, the resulting polyrhythmic melange, sometimes called "block rock," reinvents late-20th century dance-pop using the tools of the 21st. Known for their blistering live performances and relentlessly positive attitudes, the band hopes to inspire audiences to feel good about themselves in an era when the menacing shadows of night seem more threatening than ever before.

BELLOWS
http://bellows.bandcamp.com
On tour supporting the release of their new LP "The Rose Gardner," Bellows is the bedroom recording project of songwriter and producer Oliver Kalb. The sound of Bellows is sensory and delicate, subtle and quiet but erupting with frantic wobbling drums, large orchestral sections and bursts of noise that push the conventions of pop and folk. Started in late 2010 in a college dorm room, Bellows has since blossomed from solo recording experiment into a large-scale rock band, employing the help of friends to bring Kalb's intimate home recordings to life on stage.

SHANNEN MOSER
https://shannenmoser.bandcamp.com
Hailing from Berks County Pennsylvania, Shannen Moser grew up steeped in folk and country music. Influenced by the historically rich area, stretching farmland, and local folkers, Shannen credits the area with giving her the tools to write the music she does today. Her self- taught guitar plucking style and confessional lyricism are evocative of the area she grew up in.

MIKE KROL
https://mikekrol.bandcamp.com
Of all the breakups in Mike Krol’s songs, the most harrowing story is about his breakup with music. Music ruined Krol’s life. And then saved it. In chronicling that process, Krol has made his best record—Power Chords, Krol’s new Merge release is painful, voyeuristic, and angry, but ultimately transcendent and timeless. It is the sound of Krol giving in to a force greater than himself, as though the chords are playing him rather than the other way around.

WILD PINK
http://wildpink.bandcamp.com
Wild Pink songwriter John Ross sings about lakes, hills and trees; moss, thickets and canopies; smoke, snow and wind. The impressionistic cover art of the band’s eponymous debut full-length (2017) depicts a serene riverbed flush with dreamy hues of purple and green. It evokes a sense of tranquility that diametrically opposes their clamorous homebase of NYC, and the record’s mostly breezy—though occasionally blustery—songset is equally uncharacteristic of the environment it was born of. It’s not that their music perpetually idles, or that’s it’s soft in a simplistic way. They just move at their own pace. A patient pace. A very deliberate pace that’s, however unintentional, at odds with both their city and their position in rock’s timeline.

ACTIVE BIRD COMMUNITY
https://activebirdcommunity.bandcamp.com
Active Bird Community is a Brooklyn-based band formed by members Tom D'Agustino, Zach Slater and Andrew Wolfson when they were in middle school. Over 10 years later, with the addition of Quinn McGovern on drums, Active Bird Community continues to enliven the stage with their sprightly slacker vibes reminiscent of 90's indie rock. While ABC was young and experimenting with their sound, early listeners sensed something teeming beneath the surface. In the years since, they've released 3 full-length albums and played hundreds of shows to adoring fans and delighted newcomers alike. In that time, their sound has gone under numerous revisions — not out of necessity but out of a tacit refusal to stagnate or sound like anything else. As the members matured, fell in (and out) of love, moved around and made their own way, the lyrics and arrangements of each song reflected both the harmony and the discord that comes with growing up in New York. Though as anyone who's seen them live can tell you, their music is so infectious you can't help but lose yourself right along with them.

THE OBSESSIVES
https://theobsessives.bandcamp.com/
The Obsessives are a heavy pop band who incorporate elements of garage, emo and slacker rock. They began writing and performing as a two piece (Nick Bairatchnyi and Jackson Mansfield) but have grown to a quintet to fill out their live performances. The full band gives a density of sound and texture to Nick and Jackson's insightful, loud pop tunes.

Jennifer Vanilla is the entrepreneurial fantasy vessel LARPed into reality by Becca Kauffman, a New York City performance artist and long standing member of the musical group, Ava Luna. Her commercial-inspired vocalizations, paired with reconstructions (or "jv edits") of 90's house tracks, draw comparisons to Laurie Anderson, Will Powers, and Ann Steel, and provide the foundation for her comedic, theatrical live performances. JV has toured coast to coast and performed alongside Yaeji, Carrie Brownstein (Sleater Kinney), Cindy Wilson (The B-52's), Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), YACHT, Dynasty Handbag, Mr. Twin Sister, and Sateen at venues such as MoMA PS1, Museum of Modern Art, Revolve Gallery, Zebulon, and Bowery Ballroom. Her album This is Jennifer was Rough Trade's Cassette of the Month in April 2018. Her public access show, The Jennifer Vanilla Hour, airs monthly on Queens Public Television.

HOME BODY
https://home-body.bandcamp.com/
Fever-pop duo Home Body ignores convention with their vivid blend of electronic, new wave, and experimental pop music, performed from the gut with wild abandon and art-school-cool theatricality. Balancing textured layers of juicy synthesizers, gritty beats, and tectonic bass with spirited, stormy vocals, synthesist Eric Hnatow and vocalist Haley Morgan create a visceral sonic landscape that feels equal parts cosmic, fleshy and electric. Emerging from the vibrant Western Mass music scene, Home Body plays with form and improvisation while retaining a dreamy pop sensibility and demanding presence. Live, the duo punctuates their sound with dance and DIY manual light manipulation, reaching beyond their performance to create a high-vibration spectacle that is buzzing with soul, shadow, and depth.

NUEX
https://wearenuex.bandcamp.com/releases
Camille, a budding singer songwriter from DC, and Teddy, a well-traveled and seasoned musician, met serendipitously one day at a local eatery where they ended up chatting for hours about their musical pasts, present and future over lunch. Weekly phone conversations and long threads of text messaging eventually culminated into the two of them drinking mint juleps in Camille's backyard, romancing over shared musical influences and imagining futures of sublime success. Out of the clouds and out of the blue, it was there that something was born between the two. Something NUEX.
